Spotlight customer reviews:
Customer Rating: Summary: Great, but please use less actresses/models as examples!Comment: This book has tons of great ideas and product recommendations from high-priced $375 moisturizers to drug store brands for under $10. I went to Sephora and tried several of the products recommended and loved them.
What I did not like was the use of actresses/models with million dollar expense accounts for plastic surgeons, stylists, professional hair and makeup teams to ensure they look Young and Hip (YH), as opposed to Old Ladies (OL). While it is nice that some of these women look great, I don't think most regular folk out there have the same types of budgets.Customer Rating: Summary: Over hyped bookComment: there is nothing much new in this book if you have been reading your fashion mags. Even the lists of recommended hairdressers etc. in different cities is a regular feature in the fashion mags at least once a year. It's an easy read but not much new here. I would say you can save your money and skip this book.
Also, she seems to repeatedly over promote certain brands which makes me wonder if they paid her. A whole chapter is devoted to Spanx undergarments....Customer Rating: Summary: Very good advice in general but do not buy recomended "brilliant buys".Comment: This book has a very good advice from the length of skirts, hose, lipstick color, haircuts with bangs - a very good book.
At the same time the "brilliant buys" advice is not always good, looks like it was not researched fully.
I bought two things from the list and both did not perform as promised - I had to return them.
The book is going to be my reference to H&Y look for a long-long time; combined with a proper nutrition and resistance training exercise program one can look 15-20 years younger and no shape-wear is needed :).
Customer Rating: Summary: Don't waste your moneyComment: This book was really not useful. Most of the suggestions are common sense and the rest didn't really fit my lifestyle. After I finished the book I realized that I might know more than the author. You don't have to spend a lot of money to dress young; just stay away from those elastic waisted pants with matching tops, and wear less makeup as you get older.Customer Rating: Summary: First recommended by a stranger in my gymComment: I found this book to answer its promise of making me look younger. Certain familiarities or distances are the "rule" in gym locker rooms and I was delighted when a woman opened up to me to recommend this book It was exactly what I was looking for.
She said as soon as she followed the rules on skirt length she got compliments on losing weight. That was good enough for me.
As other readers have pointed out, not all suggestions will apply to all people, and it has been hard for me to deal with lightning my dark hair. Little by little however, it is getting lighter (yes I cut bangs) and people are talking about my eyes. It is amazing what people will attribute to a change in your looks.
I don't wear a lot of skirts but picking slacks, while always a chore, has been made easier with a new set of guidelines to follow. I can see on the hanger if I should consider trying them on now vs. my old armload headed to the dressing room. And, if you follow these suggestions, people will tell you that you look younger. It is pretty simple and fail proof.
